Okay, I admit it – I am a lover of the lowly lobelia. But I propose that this understated, mostly ignored “filler plant” is a real beauty in its own right. Have you ever stopped to think about its virtues? It rarely complains, asking only for ample water, plenty of indirect sunlight, and not to have its roots disturbed. If you favor it by providing these small requests it will reward you with exotic-looking yet delicate tiny flowers, resistance to most insects, continuous self-sowing (a boon to budget-conscious gardeners), and will act as a foil for your other plants. It is versatile enough to edge planting beds, use as a ground cover or drape gracefully from window boxes, hanging planters or garden pots. All of this and it is humble too!
